Wild Kelp

Where it all started…
In its beginnings, Naas Foods started out experimenting with wild kelp. In Ahousaht territory, wild beds of Bull Kelp and Giant Kelp are abundant. While kelp has long been overlooked, Naas Foods saw a beautiful and sustainable resource with so much potential.

We harvest wild kelp by hand, carefully selecting the healthy “plants” and limiting the disruption in the ecosystem they create to the best of our ability. In order to ensure sustainable harvest practices and natural re-growth of the kelp, we follow guidelines such as cutting the Bull Kelp blades at least 6 inches from the pneumatosis, harvesting no more than 20% of a bed, harvesting from multiple beds, etc.
Our licence allows us to harvest kelp from multiple locations within Clayoquot Sound. This ensures we can find healthy kelp throughout the year as the lifecycle of kelp changes slightly from one location to another depending on current, exposure, and depth of the beds.
Our wild kelp is mostly used to make our food products and is delivered fresh to local restaurants.
